Alpha-lipoic acid is an essential enzymatic cofactor present in tissues, where it has antioxidant functions in both its oxidized and reduced form. It is involved in the synthesis of glutathione, guarantees the functionality of vitamin E and is involved in energy production at the level of a fundamental enzyme, pyruvate decarboxylase, which catalyzes the transition from glycolysis to the Krebs cycle, increasing the availability of energy.

Its antioxidant action consists in protecting nerve fibers, which is why it is used in the treatment of various neuropathies: diabetes, retina and carpal tunnel syndrome. Together with chromium picolinate, it participates in the regulation of blood sugar levels by influencing a plasmatic factor, the GTF (glucose tolerance factor), which regulates and increases insulin activity.

Lipoic acid is considered an "insulin-like" factor because it increases insulin sensitivity in muscle tissue and not in fat tissue. Mimic can therefore be used in cases of insulin resistance. Thanks to this property, it facilitates the storage of glycogen, the synthesis of proteins and an increased use of fats for energy purposes.

The extract of Lagerstroemia speciosa (Banaba), which has been attributed significant hypoglycemic properties in several scientific studies, inhibits the differentiation of fat cells and thus facilitates the breakdown of fat deposits in the organism.
